Cat Adoption
Every animal who crosses our door is an individual…not just a number. We work hard to make the perfect match with each and every adoption. Cats and kittens are available for adoption at three months of age. Prior to adoption all cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies, FVRCP, tested for feline leukemia and FIV, have had a fecal analysis and are treated for any internal or external parasites. Cats and kittens with a wide range of treatable disease and injury are provided the appropriate veterinary care. All adoptable cats have implanted microchips for identification.
Meeting Your Cat
We invite you to come in during open hours or by appointment to meet your perspective cat. Our shelter staff will talk to you about your home situation and the kind of cat you are interested in adopting. If you have identified a cat through our web site or Petfinder, please let us know who you picked. We encourage you to spend some time with the cat in one of our shelter rooms. Take your time – cats may take a while to warm up to strangers.
Submitting an Application
You can submit an application before or after you meet your cat. The application will help us assess your experience with pets and the suitability of this particular animal to your home. We process applications in the order that the actual application came in, irrespective of any other expressions of interest. Many people fill out an application immediately after meeting their cat. Others fill it out and submit it beforehand. The application has instructions on how to submit it by mail, email, fax, or hand delivery. In general, the Humane Society does not permit same day adoptions. If you are traveling far to meet the cat, then please contact us and submit an application ahead of time so we can conduct vet checks. We can also discuss waiving the same day adoption rule in these special circumstances.
Adoption Checks
We will use the application information to check with your veterinarian to verify that your prior animals have been well cared for. If we see areas of concern, we will discuss them with you. If this is your first pet, then we may ask you to interview a veterinary office to get an idea of what kind of regular care is needed and the costs you can anticipate in keeping the animal. We will be back in touch with you within two business days to let you know of our decision and to arrange an adoption day. If we cannot get in touch with you after three days, we will go on to the next application, so please give us a telephone, text, or email at which you can reliably be reached. If you decide upon further reflection that this is not the right cat for you, please get back to us as soon as possible so we can give the cat a chance with the next adopter.
Adoption Day
Once your application has been approved, we will arrange an adoption day, typically within seven days. You should take this time to prepare your home and family for your new arrival including getting beds, litter boxes and planning daily care responsibilities. On adoption day, we will provide you with:
- Your Cat’s medical records
- A coupon for a free initial veterinary exam at a participating veterinary office
- A starter bag of food
We will also collect fees for the adoption. Fees may be paid in cash, check or by credit or debit card. Lastly, we will sign the adoption papers and discuss any special care tips for this cat. Adoption fees are regarded as non-refundable and refunds will only be made under special circumstances at the discretion of the Humane Society.

Returned Adoptions
Sometimes an adoption just does not work out. It may be that the cat is incompatible with another pet or a member of the family. In those cases, we ask you to get in touch with the Humane Society as soon as possible. We will suggest some possible strategies to overcome the problem, but if that does not work, we recommend that you return the cat to the shelter as soon as possible.
