Dog Adoption
Every dog who comes to us is an individual. We pride ourselves on getting to know them while they are with us and strive to make the perfect match with every adoption. Dogs and puppies are available for adoption at three months old. They are spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies, distemper (DH(L)PP), kennel cough and canine influenza virus. Dogs have had a fecal analysis and have been treated for internal and external parasites. All dogs are heartworm tested and microchipped. During their stay all dogs are given flea, tick and heartworm preventative on a monthly basis. Any dog with a treatable medical condition or injury is provided the appropriate care prior to being adopted.
Meeting Your New Dog
We invite you to visit during public hours or by appointment to meet your potential new best friend We’ll talk to you about your home, your lifestyle and the kind of dog you are interested in adopting and introduce you to those we think would be a good match. If you have already identified a dog through our web site or Petfinder, please let us know. We encourage you to spend some time with the dog, go for a walk, or visit indoors or play fetch in one of our outdoor runs. Take your time to get to know your potential new pet – dogs coming out of their kennels are usually very excited and it may take some time for them to settle down. Other dogs take a while to warm up to someone unfamiliar to them. Allow them a little time to show you who they really are.
The Application Process
We ask anyone interested in adopting to complete an application. Applications can be found at this link or completed during your visit. If you are completing your application on line, it can be emailed, scanned or faxed to us. The application tells us more about your lifestyle and your home to help us help you to make the perfect match. If you are interested in a particular dog, please be sure to add his or her name. We process applications in the order in which they are received, be it in person, online or by fax. You are welcome to complete an application prior to your visit or after meeting a dog to become your new best friend. In general, the Humane Society discourages same day adoptions. However, if you are traveling some distance to meet the dog, then please contact us by phone or email and submit an application in advance of your visit. Please provide us with at least 48 hours before complete the process on our end. We will contact your veterinarian to verify that other animals in the household are current on vaccinations and receive appropriate veterinary care. If this is your first pet, then we may ask you to interview a veterinarian to discuss a schedule of the regular veterinary care required and the associated costs. This is to help you make an informed decision before you adopt. If you rent your landlord will be contacted to determine whether or not you have permission to have a pet and whether or not there are any breed or size restrictions. We will generally contact with you in 48 hours to discuss any questions, let you know of the adoption decision and to arrange an adoption day. If we are unable to contact you within three days we will consider your application withdrawn and proceed to the next applicant. If, upon further reflection, you decide that a particular dog is not the right dog for you, or you don’t feel that it is the right time to bring a new family member into your home, please let us know as soon as possible so we can give the dog every chance to find his perfect home.
Meeting Family Pets
If you have other pets at home, please let the staff member know. We will likely ask that you bring your current dog in for a meet and greet to make sure they the dogs get along. We do our best to assess a dog’s compatibility with cats, but every home situation can be different and how they coexist will often depend on their individual personalities and how they are initially introduced.
Adoption Day
Once your application has been approved, we will arrange an adoption day, typically within seven days. You should take this time to prepare your home and family for your new arrival including purchasing supplies such as crates, beds, toys and treats and planning daily care responsibilities. On adoption day, we will provide you with:
- The dog’s medical records
- Microchip information
- Information for a free initial veterinary exam at a participating veterinary office
- A sample bag of food
We will finalize the adoption papers and discuss any special care which may be required.
Adoption Fees
Fees may be paid by cash, check or credit card. Adoption fees are regarded as non-refundable . Exceptions may be made under special circumstances at the discretion of the Humane Society.
Adoption Type | Fee |
---|---|
Dogs 12 months or older | $225.00 |
Puppies younger than 12 months | $275.00 |
Returned Adoptions
Sometimes an adoption just does not work out. It may be that the dog is incompatible with another pet or a member of the family. In those cases, we ask you to get in touch with the Humane Society as soon as possible. We will suggest some possible strategies to overcome the problem, but if that does not work, we recommend that you return the dog to the shelter as soon as possible. We will make every attempt to match you with another pet if you would like.
