If you are concerned about possible animal cruelty or neglect, contact the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office at 607-535-8222.
Be prepared to supply information such as the nature of the cruelty, how you observed it, and the location so the Animal Control Officer or a Deputy can respond appropriately. Such complaints can be made anonymously but they must be made through the Sheriff’s Department.
The Humane Society of Schuyler County is not empowered to investigate reports of possible animal cruelty or neglect or to make arrests. In Schuyler County that role is the responsibility of the Sheriff’s Department and the Watkins Glen Police Department. The Humane Society will work with the law enforcement, veterinarians, and the District Attorney’s office to prosecute animal cruelty cases to the fullest extent of the law.
Animal cruelty can take many forms, ranging from physical abuse to lack of food, water, appropriate shelter and veterinary care.
Sadly, animal cruelty and neglect cases do occur in Schuyler County. National studies have shown that this behavior is often a precursor to human cruelty and violence. It must not be ignored.
